4,000 beagles rescued by an American breeder need homes

Nearly 4,000 beagles are looking for new homes in what is believed to be one of the largest dog rescue efforts in the United States.

The dogs were raised in a clinic in Virginia, which were then sold to a drug testing facility.

But the company has now closed for animal rights abuses - and a charity is on a mission to rehome the dogs.

"Four thousand is a lot," said Kitty Block, head of the Charity.

"And it will take 60 days to get all of these animals out and we're working with shelters and rescue partners across the country, working with them to get these dogs to the loving home." sustainable," he told Reuters . . . .

The Cumberland farm, owned by Envigo RMS, was sued by the US Department of Justice in May, accusing it of animal cruelty.

The researchers found that some of the dogs were euthanized but did not receive veterinary treatment because of easily treatable diseases. They are also fed a diet of insects, mold and feces, and some are breastfed

In one case, 25 puppies died from frostbite.

After the lawsuit, the company denied the allegations but announced that it would close the facility and keep the dogs at the animal shelter, an animal welfare organization, CBS News reported.

The beagles now undergo medical tests and vaccinations before they become available for adoption.
Virginia Senator Bill Stanley told Reuters the rescue was the result of years of struggle.
